New research shows popular traybakes pack more sugar than an adult should eat in a day

A recent study by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), in collaboration with local councils and the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), has revealed startling nutritional facts about traybakes sold in cafés across Northern Ireland. The research found that many of these beloved treats are loaded with sugar, saturated fat, and calories — often surpassing the recommended daily intake for an adult.

The study sampled a range of traybakes, including fruit‑topped slices, chocolate squares and iced sponge cakes. Nutritional analysis showed that a single portion could contain well over 30–40 g of sugar, plus high levels of saturated fat and calories — in some cases making up more than half of an adult’s recommended daily limit in just one serving.

Despite the findings, researchers discovered that consumers are open to change. Many café‑goers indicated they’d welcome healthier reformulations — if cafés offered lower‑sugar, lighter‑fat options without compromising taste. According to the FSA and local councils, this signals a real chance for food outlets to lead change, reduce health risks, and meet growing demand for better‑for‑you treats.

The timing is critical, as concerns about obesity, diabetes, and heart disease grow across Northern Ireland. Health experts say cutting down on sugar and saturated fat — especially from popular snacks like traybakes — can have a major impact on public health.

If you enjoy a tray‑bake, it’s worth checking its portion size and considering splitting it, or opting for a smaller treat. Cafés and bakeries across Northern Ireland are now being urged to rethink recipes, offer clearer nutritional information, and give customers a healthier treat that doesn’t pack quite so much sugar.

With growing awareness and demand for healthier options, this research could spark a welcome shift — proving that indulgence doesn’t have to harm our health.
