With Christmas just days away, many shoppers are finding that online grocery delivery slots appear completely booked. But experienced customers say that “sold out” doesn’t always mean gone for good.
Across major supermarkets, including Sainsbury’s, shoppers report that delivery slots often reappear later in the evening — sometimes hours after they first disappear. The reason is simple: cancellations.
As Christmas approaches, many customers book slots early “just in case,” then cancel when plans change, food is bought elsewhere, or cut-off times are missed. When this happens, supermarkets quietly release those slots back into the system — often without any alert.
Several shoppers say the most effective time to check is late evening, typically between 9pm and midnight. This is when unused or cancelled slots are most likely to drop back online. Refreshing the checkout or delivery selection page — rather than the supermarket homepage — appears to work best.
Another tip is to have your basket fully packed in advance. When slots do reappear, they can go within seconds. Being logged in and ready to check out can make the difference between securing a delivery and missing it again.
Shoppers also recommend checking multiple times rather than giving up after one attempt. Slots may appear briefly, disappear, and then reappear again later the same evening.
It’s worth noting that availability can vary by postcode and store capacity, and there’s no guarantee a slot will open. However, many shoppers say persistence pays off — especially in the final week before Christmas.
For those struggling to fit in a supermarket trip or juggling last-minute plans, refreshing later in the day may be the best chance of securing a delivery when it matters most.
