Do You Have These in Your Loft? 5 Things Many Brits Own That Are Worth Something

If you’re anything like most people in the UK, your loft is probably full of boxes you haven’t opened in years. Things were put up there with good intentions — “We’ll sort it later” — and then quietly forgotten. But according to professional organisers and collectors, some of the most ordinary items found in British lofts are now considered vintage and can be worth more than people expect.

This doesn’t mean you’re sitting on a fortune, but it does mean it’s worth taking a second look before donating or throwing things away.

Here are five items many Brits already have in their loft that are worth checking more carefully.

1. Vintage Pyrex and Glass Cookware (1970s–1990s)

Patterned Pyrex bowls, casserole dishes, and ovenware were once a staple in UK kitchens. Floral designs, autumn colours, and clear glass dishes often get boxed up when kitchens are updated.

Rough value range: £15–£150, depending on pattern, condition, and whether it’s a full set.

Even pieces that look “old-fashioned” can attract interest, especially if they’re free from cracks or heavy wear.

2. Old Board Games with Original Pieces

Board games often end up in the loft once children grow up. Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo, and lesser-known vintage games from the 70s and 80s regularly turn up during clear-outs.

Rough value range: £20–£200 if complete.

The key word here is complete. Original boards, counters, instructions, and boxes make a big difference, which is why many people regret giving them away too quickly.

3. Solid Wood Furniture

Small side tables, stools, chests, and shelves made from solid wood are commonly stored in lofts because they feel bulky or outdated compared to modern flat-pack furniture.

Rough value range: £50–£400 depending on age, wood type, and condition.

Solid wood pieces are increasingly sought after because they’re durable and repairable — something modern MDF furniture often isn’t.

4. Vintage Children’s Books and Annuals

Old Ladybird books, Enid Blyton editions, illustrated annuals, and school readers from the mid to late 20th century are frequently overlooked.

Rough value range: £10–£300, with early editions or full series fetching more.

Even well-loved books can hold value, particularly if the artwork is intact and the pages are complete.

5. Old Tools and Toolboxes

Many lofts contain inherited hand tools, toolboxes, or branded equipment that hasn’t been used in years. These are often kept “just in case” — and sometimes quietly forgotten.

Rough value range: £20–£250, depending on brand, age, and condition.

Traditional hand tools and vintage tool chests are especially popular with collectors and restorers.

Before donating, selling, or binning anything during a loft clear-out, it’s worth doing a little research — or at least opening the box and taking a proper look.

Do you recognise any of these items in your own loft?

Or have you ever found something surprising during a clear-out?

Let us know in the comments.
