Borough Market has hit headlines recently over claims it’s cracking down on influencers — but the iconic London food destination has confirmed there’s no outright ban. Instead, it’s tightening filming guidelines in response to growing concerns from traders and visitors.
Social media creators have flocked to the market in recent years, often showcasing its diverse food offerings to thousands — even millions — of followers. But according to Borough Market, the increase in filming has created “significant congestion,” particularly during busy trading hours.
A spokesperson from the market clarified: “We’re not banning influencers. We welcome food lovers and content creators, but we ask everyone to respect the space and the people working in it.”
The market has now introduced strict rules about when and how filming can take place:
- No filming between 11am and 2:30pm on weekdays
- No filming at any time on Saturdays or Sundays
- Professional or commercial filming must be approved in advance via an application form on the market’s website
These restrictions are designed to protect the experience for shoppers and ensure traders can work without obstruction.
Some vendors have voiced frustration at influencers who film without permission or buy minimal items. Others are supportive, saying content creators bring valuable publicity.
Borough Market says it still values digital promotion — especially when done responsibly. “We encourage collaboration between content creators and traders, as long as it’s mutually respectful.”
For creators hoping to film, the advice is clear: get permission first, avoid peak hours, and be mindful of the environment.
With the festive season approaching and footfall expected to surge, the market hopes these guidelines will ensure a fair balance between business, creativity, and crowd control.
