Shoppers at ASDA have been left stunned after spotting crates of free and ultra-cheap Christmas vegetables being given away in some stores — with reports coming in from Lowestoft showing just how generous the initiative has become.
Images shared by shoppers show large produce displays marked “Fresh Festive Prices”, with vegetables either completely free or reduced to as little as 5p per bag. The move appears to be part of ASDA’s ongoing effort to reduce food waste in the days immediately after Christmas, when surplus seasonal produce would otherwise be thrown away.
According to signage seen in-store, shoppers in Lowestoft were able to help themselves to festive staples including:
• White potatoes (2kg) – 5p
• Carrots – 5p
• Parsnips – 5p
• Brussels sprouts – 5p
• Broccoli – 5p
• In some cases, bags given away completely free
Local shoppers also reported that staff encouraged customers to take what they needed, with some saying items were not scanned at the tills in order to speed things up and prevent waste. Social media comments suggest there was no strict limit in some stores, although shoppers were encouraged to take only what they could use.
While this particular display was spotted in Lowestoft, it’s important to note that availability varies by store. Some ASDA locations may still be offering vegetables for 5–8p, while others may have already cleared stock entirely. Shoppers are advised to check in-store, especially early in the day.
This initiative has been widely praised, with customers applauding ASDA for prioritising waste reduction at a time when food costs remain high for many households. It also offers a timely reminder that post-Christmas supermarket visits can uncover some of the best-value food deals of the year.
Top tip: If you spot these crates, think beyond roast dinners — leftover veg can be frozen, blended into soups, or used for batch cooking in January.
