When it comes to pantry items, we often assume the expiration date is the final word. But the truth is, many foods are still perfectly fine to eat well past that printed date. In fact, the “best by” date usually refers to quality—not safety.
Here are 9 pantry staples you might want to pause before tossing—you could be throwing away perfectly good food.
White Rice
White rice has an impressively long shelf life—up to 10 years when stored properly. Brown rice is the exception—it goes rancid faster due to its natural oils.
Dried Pasta
Even if the package is a year past the date, dried pasta is often still totally fine. As long as it’s stored in a cool, dry place and shows no signs of bugs or mold, it’s good to go.
Honey
Fun fact: Honey literally never expires. Crystallization is normal—just gently warm the jar to return it to a liquid state.
Salt
Salt is a natural preservative, so it doesn’t go bad. Whether it’s iodized or sea salt, it can last indefinitely when kept dry.
Vinegar
Both white and apple cider vinegar have nearly unlimited shelf lives. If it smells normal and looks clear, it’s good to use—even years later.
