7 Lidl Foods Everyone Swears By but I Can’t Stand

You’ve probably heard plenty of praise for Lidl’s food range, with many shoppers singing the supermarket’s praises for its quality and value. While lots of people swear by certain Lidl products, not every item is going to be a hit with everyone.

This article looks at seven popular Lidl foods that plenty of others love but just don’t work for me. It’s a chance to see the other side of the story and get a fresh perspective on some of the supermarket’s most talked-about treats.

Hortus Gin – popular but too bitter for me

If you’ve tried Hortus Gin from Lidl, you’ll know it’s made with traditional botanicals like juniper and coriander. It’s praised for quality and affordable price, even winning blind taste tests.

However, you might find it a bit too bitter. The herbal notes come through strongly, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

If you prefer a smoother, softer gin, Hortus might not suit your taste. It’s great if you like your gin with a piney, sharp kick but can feel overpowering otherwise.

You can learn more about this gin’s profile and fan following on the Lidl Hortus range page.

Lidl’s Deluxe Nut Bar – flavours vary, sometimes overly sweet

You might find Lidl’s Deluxe Nut Bar offers a range of flavours like almond, coconut, and cashew, which is great for variety. However, the sweetness level can be hit or miss depending on the batch you get.

Sometimes the bars come across as a bit too sugary, which can overpower the nutty taste you’d expect. If you prefer a less sweet snack, these might not be your first choice.

The texture is usually good, with a decent balance of crunch and chewiness. But if sweetness isn’t your thing, you could find yourself reaching for something else instead. For more details on the different flavours available, check out Lidl’s Deluxe Fruit & Nut Bar range.

Frozen Pasteis de Nata – overrated custard tarts

You’ve probably heard frozen pastel de nata from Lidl gets rave reviews. But to me, they don’t quite hit the mark. The pastry sometimes feels a bit too soft or soggy instead of wonderfully crisp.

The custard filling, while creamy, can lack the depth you’d expect from a fresh tart. It misses that perfect balance of sweetness with a subtle caramelised top. If you want the authentic experience, fresh or artisan options might be better.

Still, if you’re after a quick, budget-friendly snack, they’re not terrible. Just don’t expect bakery-quality every time. For more on Lidl pastel de nata, see this review of Lidl’s bakery pastel de nata.

Phish Food-style Ice Cream – I find it too rich

If you enjoy really dense, rich ice cream, you might like Phish Food-style flavours. But for me, it feels overwhelmingly rich, with the thick chocolate ice cream and gooey marshmallow swirls.

The caramel and chocolatey fish chunks add extra sweetness and texture, which can be a bit much if you prefer lighter desserts. It’s definitely a flavour that divides opinion.

You might find it a treat on occasion, but I often find it leaves me feeling too full rather than satisfied. If your taste leans towards subtle, this may not be your top pick.

Beef Lasagne – often lacks flavour and texture

If you’ve tried Lidl’s beef lasagne, you might notice it sometimes feels a bit bland. The beef can come across as tough, making it harder to enjoy every bite.

The béchamel sauce is often quite thin, which might leave you wanting a creamier texture.

The pasta sheets tend to be al dente but don’t add much flavour, making the whole dish feel a little lacking.

While some shoppers love it, you might find it doesn’t quite hit the mark if you prefer a richer, more flavoursome lasagne experience.

Greek Yoghurt – too tangy for my taste buds

If you’re anything like me, Greek yoghurt can sometimes feel a bit too sharp. Lidl’s Milbona Greek style yoghurt is popular and affordable, but the tanginess is quite strong if you prefer something milder.

You might find it hard to enjoy straight out of the pot without adding something sweet. Some people love that classic tartness, but if your taste leans towards creamy and smooth, this yoghurt may not be your best match.

Adding honey or fruit can help balance the flavour, but if you want to avoid that tang altogether, you might want to try other brands or styles. For a detailed review, check out Lidl Milbona Greek style yoghurt review.

Fridge Pizzas – some come with mouldy or off cheese

You might be tempted to grab a fridge pizza for a quick meal. However, some people have found issues with the cheese on these pizzas. There have been reports of them arriving with mouldy or off-tasting cheese, which can ruin the whole experience.

It’s frustrating when you expect a tasty snack but end up with something that smells or tastes strange. Always check the pizza carefully before cooking. It’s worth taking a bit of extra time to avoid a disappointing meal.

If you’re loyal to Lidl for other products, just be cautious when it comes to their fridge pizzas. You might want to try one from a different brand instead.
